Data Import Walkthrough

AmeriCommerce allows you perform mass imports of many different kinds of information. Our import tool allows you to easily transfer data and keep your data continuously up to date. AmeriCommerce can currently handle imports for the following categories:

  • Customers
  • Orders
  • Categories
  • Products (including pricing and variants)
  • Tracking
  • Inventory

The AmeriCommerce Import Wizard

Your information tables are uploaded through the AmeriCommerce Import Wizard. Because the importing process for each area is very similar, the Product Import will be outlined here.  A commonly used feature, the Product Import Tool allows you to enter and update catalog items en masse.

Data Import Tools are housed under Global Settings.

Once all of your data is entered in the spreadsheet like the example below, save it as a .csv file.  If you are using your own spreadsheet, convert it to .cvs before you proceed.  By using our template, you avoid confusion when mapping your categories over to those in our list.

2. Uploading Your Data

After your file is saved, click Next on the top right corner of the import page to go to the preview page.  From here, click Browse to open the AmeriCommerce File Explorer.  This brings up a standard browser of files that are saved on your site.

You will need to Browse for the file on your computer and Upload it to an appropriate folder.  You can create new folders and select shared or site-specific folders through the File Explorer.  After uploading the .csv file, it should be displayed in the explorer.  Click the Load button (the "+" in the  row) to return to the Import Wizard.  If you are asked if you want to close the File Explorer, click Yes.

Make sure that the .csv file uploaded properly by clicking Load Columns.  This will let you preview the columns and move to the next step of mapping any necessary changes between your columns and the AmeriCommerce format.

3. Column Mapping

This step maps the columns from your CSV file to AmeriCommerce.  If you used our template, you can skip this step because all of the data is properly categorized.

If you have your own format, pick one of your columns on the left and select our matching column.  If you wish, you can Save the current mapping scheme for future use at the bottom of the page.  Next time you come to import the same file, you will not have to re-map the data again.

4. Validate Data

ALWAYS validate your data before finishing your import.  This will expose any errors that you may need to correct.  It also checks the system for problems that your data may appear to have in structure or logic, such as recording duplicate entries.  Once validated, you will see a passing validation message.

5. Upload Data

You are now ready to finish importing your products.  Upload the new data by clicking the Upload Data (Finish) link.  If there were any problems with the validation or the upload, you will be given a list of errors that you need to find and fix.

Congratulations!  You have imported new products into your catalog.  Use similar methods with the Import Wizard for handling customer and order lists, tracking information, and inventory data.

Getting Data Ready

All of the columns you will need to properly import your data are defined on this first page.  Also, this page introduces you to the CSV file format that we use for importing data.  CSV stands for Comma-Separated Values, and it is required to read your information into our software.  There is a link to a sample file which will give you a blank template containing all the columns.  If you have never imported data using AmeriCommerce, we recommend using this sample for a jump start.  If you already have your own file, you can convert it and use it in later steps.

Deleting Data From a Single/Specific Field

Leaving the column/cell blank does not delete the pre-existing information for that field.. The original value will remain as is.  It will assume you are updating other information and leave the blanked out information alone.  To delete information from a particular field, in the .csv import file you can put <<DELETE>> in the field and it will remove the value in that field.
